Building the Evidence Base for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal: Strengthening Research and Government Collaboration on Emerging Ocean-Climate Approaches
Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR), including emerging approaches such as Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE), represents a critical frontier in ocean-climate innovation with the potential to make a significant contribution to long-term climate mitigation goals. As the field continues to evolve, advancing a rigorous scientific foundation through modelling, controlled field trials, and comprehensive environmental impact assessments remains essential. This session will convene leading researchers, innovators, and government representatives from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond to highlight progress in mCDR science and examine in depth promising, yet still developing, techniques like Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement. Participants will discuss the current state of scientific knowledge, research and development priorities, and methodological frameworks for assessing mitigation potential, environmental integrity, and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems. Grounded in science, the discussion aims to foster collaboration among national research initiatives, strengthen the global evidence base for mCDR, and identify opportunities to advance field trials, long-term monitoring, and data-sharing frameworks. The session will also consider how early scientific findings can inform the development of future governance and policy systems. The panel will be followed by a networking session.
