Biochar: unlocking climate, ecosystem, and ESG value through artisanal and industrial methods.

Hosted by the International Biochar Initiative
Biochar sits at the crossroads of climate action, soil restoration, and community resilience. This session will explore biochar’s role in Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) – from the scientific fundamentals and durability of storage, to its economic logic and wider value across climate, ecosystems, and ESG impact. Bringing together both artisanal and industrial deployment models, the event connects local, smallholder-focused projects with large-scale plants already delivering six-figure volumes of high-quality carbon removals.
Featuring leaders from Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe, the discussion will highlight how biochar can regenerate degraded soils, strengthen local economies, and channel climate finance to communities on the frontlines – while meeting growing demand for robust, durable CDR.
What we’ll cover
- Science & durability: How biochar works as a long-lived carbon sink, including soil health, water retention and ecosystem co-benefits.
- Market & ESG drivers: Business models for biochar CDR – from carbon credits and product sales to Scope 3 and broader ESG reporting.
- Global case studies: Lessons from operating models in Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa and beyond – from project design to farmer engagement.
- Scaling with integrity: Integrating biochar into carbon markets, managing permanence and risk, and ensuring social and local ecosystem value as deployment scales.
