The Oceans as a Climate Hero
November 11 @ 15:30 to 17:00 -03
Hybrid Event
Free
Hosted by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and others
The ocean is our planet’s unsung superhero – absorbing carbon, storing heat, and
fighting climate change, though often at great cost to its own health. This panel will
take a holistic, science-first look at marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR),
considering multiple biotic and abiotic approaches to strengthen the ocean’s natural
carbon sink.
What we’ll cover
Together, we’ll explore questions including:
- How could this work in practice?
- How would we measure its effectiveness?
- What risks or trade-offs must be considered, understood, and managed?
- How can it be done responsibly, for the benefit of both people and the planet?
- And the challenges of funding and governance standards for field scale studies. Panelists will bring
a breadth of perspectives – from science and research, to policy and NGO
perspectives – to help ensure the discussion reflects both the opportunities and
challenges ahead.
