The CO2 is captured, either from a point source or directly from the atmosphere, dissolved in water, and injected into the bedrock at a minimum of 500 m depth. By dissolving the CO2 in water, the CO2 is no longer buoyant and has the tendency to sink rather than rise back to the surface. The CO2-charged water accelerates metal release from basalt and formation of solid carbonate minerals. Once stored as a mineral, the CO2 is immobilized for geological time scales and is considered permanently stored.
